Correlation between Physical Activity Status and Dyslipidemia in Korean Adults: The 2010 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Abstract
Background: Physical Activity Status (PAS) plays an important role in improving blood lipid components. This study examines the correlation among PAS, the prevalence of dyslipidemia, and parameters of dyslipidemia among Korean adults.

Methods: This study was based on data from the 2010 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES). The subject of this study was 5738 Korean adults. PAS was classified into 4 groups; walking, moderate, vigorous, and moderate-vigorous group. The correlation between PAS and dyslipidemia was presented in odd ratios and 95% confidential interval with multi-variate logistic regression analysis after adjusting potential confounders.

Results: In this study, the prevalence of dyslipidemia was 35.3% among Korean adults with the average age of 51. Despite the lack of statistical significance, adults performed any physical activities regardless of its type showed lower prevalence of dyslipidemia than those who did not. Increased total amount of performed PAS regardless of certain type was positively associated with decreased parameters of dyslipidemia (Triglyceride, non HDL-cholesterol, TG/HDL- cholesterol, Total cholesterol/ HDL- cholesterol) with statistical significance. After adjusting potential confounder, each level of PAS is positively involved in certain parameters of dyslipidemia with statistical significance.

Conclusion: Our findings provided support for the importance of physical activities in improving blood lipid component. In addition, our study offers insight that the total amount of physical activities is more important than their certain profiles, and light physical activities like walking will bring beneficial effects in improving blood lipid component in hypertriglyceridemia and lowering its risk.
